Illinois Education Association gives first ever Comptroller endorsement to David Miller
IEA joins forces with nearly 150 good government, labor and public official endorsements statewide
Chicago (Jan. 19, 2010) – The first ever endorsement from the Illinois Education Association for Comptroller was given to David Miller this weekend. As a member of the General Assembly, Miller has consistently championed public education, according to IEA President Ken Swanson.
“David Miller has served on both the House Higher Education and the Elementary and Secondary Education Committees and displayed strong leadership as House sponsor of education funding bills, HB 750 and HB 174,” Swanson said. “As the State Comptroller, he will ensure that equitable school funding remains a top priority for Illinois.”
The IEA is the state’s largest education employees’ organization, representing more than 133,000 teachers, education support professionals, higher education faculty, staff and graduate assistants, retired education employees and students preparing to become teachers. IEA is an affiliate of the 3.2 million-member National Education Association.
To date, Miller has received nearly 150 endorsements from good government, labor and civic groups as well as from elected officials, townships and counties across the state.
"I am honored to be endorsed by the IEA,” said Miller. “By working closely with them over the years, we have been able to make a difference in education funding and equal access to education. I want to continue making this difference by making this a priority issue for the Comptroller’s office.”
Miller has received numerous awards and broad recognition for his effectiveness as a legislator. In 2009, Miller was selected by his peers to be a member of the Democratic House Leadership, serving as Assistant Majority Leader.
He has served on the Appropriations for Higher Education Committee (since 2005); Business Occupational Licenses; Elementary & Secondary Education; Health Care Licenses; Mass Transit; and Transportation, Regulation, Roads (Vice-Chairperson) committees. He is also a member of the Joint Committee of Administrative Rules.
