Meet David

As a legislator, dentist and businessman, Dr. David Miller has earned a reputation for being deeply committed to the community.  Miller's vision is to improve the quality of life for the people of Illinois and ensure future prosperity for our children.

Since 2001, Miller has served as State Representative of the 29th District, a portion of Chicago's southland and adjacent suburban communities.  As an Illinois lawmaker, MIller has spearheaded, advocated for and passed legislation that has improved health care, education, economic development and consumer protection.

While serving as State Representative, Miller has also maintained his dental practice in Dolton, Illinois.  A dentist for more than 20 years, Miller has promoted dental health in underserved communities, with a particular focus on children, who are the majority of his patients. He has also created and advised on-site dental screening programs in the Chicagoland area.

Miller has held leadership positions in both the Illinois General Assembly and in various dental organizations, locally and nationally. He is a Fellow of Leadership Greater Chicago, and a recipient of the Illinois State Dental Society's William J. Greek Memorial Leadership Award.  He is past president of the Lincoln Dental Society and Kenwood/Hyde Park Branch of the Chicago Dental Society.  He also served as health chairman of the Illinois Commission on the African American Male.

In 2009, Miller was selected by his peers to serve as Assistant Majority Leader in the Illinois House.  He currently serves on the Appropriations Committee for Higher Education (and served as Chair from 2005-2008).  He also serves on the Business Occupational Licenses; Elementary & Secondary Education; Health Care Licenses; Mass Transit; Transportation, Regulation, Roads (Vice-Chairperson) committees. In addition, he is member of the Joint Committee of Administrative Rules.

Miller has received numerous awards for his work in both public and private sectors, including Legislator of the Year by the American Institute of Architects (2006) and the Illinois Pharmacists Association (2003). He has also been recognized as Distinguished Alumni of University of Illinois College of Dentistry (2004); and awarded the Monsignor John Egan Payday Loan Reform Award (2003) as well as the Government Partner Award from Metropolitan Family Services (2003).

MIller is the president of the Illinois Legislative Southland Caucus. As a freshman representative, he was accepted into both the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development (BILLD) and was a Flemming Legislative Fellow. He is past president of the Dolton Chamber of Commerce and a former board member of Habilitative Systems Incorporated. He is a founding member of the Better Funding for Better Schools Coalition.

Miller has a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from Boston University and a doctoral of dental surgery from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry.  He and his wife, Donna, have two sons, Daniel and Donovan and live in Lynwood.
